Will Smith is working with Michael Mann again. The last time they got together it resulted in Ali, the first real evidence that the Fresh Prince might actually have some skills as a serious actor. Now we know he’s for real, but back then he was a guy you stuck in to look good next to CGI creatures in summer blockbusters.
Their new movie together is something called Empire, which was written by John Logan. According to Variety, Columbia Pictures has acquired the rights to it, but nobody’s willing to talk about what the heck it’s about. The only “Empire” projects I’ve heard about relate to author Orson Scott Card’s novel and wannabe multimedia platform which is also named “Empire”. He’s talked about wanting to push into movies, but I seriously doubt one has anything to do with the other.
So I guess I’m saying Michael Mann and Will Smith are making a movie. We just don’t know what it is. On second thought, this probably isn’t even really a news story. Move along.
