Another Simpsons Movie? Here’s What Al Jean Has To Say

Do you want to feel like a super old person? The Simpsons Movie hit theaters almost a whole decade ago. There, I said it. As hard as it is to believe, nine full years have passed since everyone's favorite family from Springfield graced the silver screen for the very first time. This has left many people wondering one very important thing: will it ever happen again? As it turns out, we may now have some insight regarding whether or not a Simpsons Movie sequel will ever come to fruition.

During a panel at San Diego Comic-Con, The Simpsons' producer Al Jean opened up regarding the original Simpsons Movie, and if they have any interest in making another at some point in the near future. He said:

We talk about it, but if we do it we only want to do it if it's going to be really good. We would never do it just to cash in so if it comes out it's because we believe in it.

So while there's currently no sequel to The Simpsons Movie currently on the FOX slate, it's also not an impossibility that such a project will ever happen. In fact, Al Jean explained that it's a topic that comes up in conversation regularly while they work on The Simpsons during the season. However, the team behind the series wants to make sure that they have the right story before pressing forward with that type of commitment.

In all fairness we have to say that we're glad they're showing some degree of restraint here. Although The Simpsons Movie has carved out a nice niche for itself as a unique moment in the show's history, it wasn't exactly mind-blowing when it hit theaters in 2007. It's undoubtedly a funny affair, but it simply played out like three back to back to back episodes of the FOX series. If they creative forces behind The Simpsons ever want to bring us a follow-up movie, then they need to pull out all the stops and give us something wholly unique -- admittedly a difficult task for a cartoon family that's been on the air for three decades.

That being said, there is still plenty of rock solid material in The Simpsons Movie to warrant a follow-up film at some point. I think we can all agree that we want another Simpsons Movie, if for no other reason than to see more of Homer's antics with Spider-Pig:

While we continue to live our lives without a follow-up to The Simpsons Movie, we take solace knowing that the idea isn't off the table, and that it could very well one day happen. For now, we will just have make due with The Simpsons TV show, which will commence its 28th season on September 25th at 8 PM EST. In the meantime, stay tuned for more details as they come on any potential Simpsons Movie sequels!
