Doctor Strange is a movie that promises to a lot of new and different things within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, a comment from Tilda Swinton has us thinking that it might wrap in a more familiar place. While Doctor Strange will deal primarily with alternate dimensions, the actress says it will end with a planet, which has us wondering how it may connect to the rest of the MCU.
My son, we had this amazing moment one day when I met him for lunch one day in the canteen and I said, "What did you do this morning?" and he said, 'Made a planet!' It's a planet that, I've now seen the movie, and it appears to great effect at the end of the movie.
Tilda Swinton was a guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live and was discussing how her kids were actually involved in the production of Doctor Strange as part of a school work study program. Her son worked in the art department where he was apparently involved in the creation of a planet used at the end of the film. Planets are not something that we necessarily expected to be part of Doctor Strange. We expect the character will be traveling to other planes of existence, but that's not quite the same thing. Another planet involves outer space and outer space could mean a connection to either Guardians of the Galaxy or Thor: Ragnarok.
The thing about a Marvel movie is that when you say something appears to great effect at the end of a movie, it doesn't necessarily mean that it happens before the credits roll. The planet could be part of a mid or post-credits sequence teasing some other aspect of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Since Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is the next film in the franchise, it's possible that we could get something referencing them at the end of Doctor Strange. Alternatively, since Thor is also an alien from another planet, this could be a reference to his next movie as well.
If there is a connection between Doctor Strange and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 it could be a pretty big deal. While we know that Guardians will have to cross over with the rest of the MCU at some point, up until now they have remained a separate entity. Maybe this will be the scene that begins to bring the Guardians in line with everybody else.
We'll be the looking for the planet that Tilda Swinton's son helped create when Doctor Strange hits theaters November 4.
