Why Is Avengers: Infinity War Scouting Out This Mansion?

Roland Emmerich

While we're still a couple of years away from seeing Avengers: Infinity War, however, the massive undertaking that it is, means that pre-production is already underway. This has apparently led the films' directors to a particular location for potential filming. The Russo Brothers recently took a picture of themselves doing some location scouting. So what location is this, and what is it for? Let the speculation begin.

While the staircase is certainly a nice effect, that would make for an interesting shot for any reason, it's not immediately apparent what a building like this is, or could be used for. However, there are some possibilities. Having just seen Doctor Strange and been introduced to the Sanctum Sanctorum, this could be part of it that is expected to be used in Avengers: Infinity War. The building is of a decent size, and probably larger on the inside anyway, so surely there's a lot of it which we have not yet seen. We can even see the digital effects used in Strange put to great effect here to make the staircase stretch out into infinity.

Alternatively, we have to wonder if we'll be getting the Avengers Mansion at some point during the next two Avengers movies. While Stark Tower was the home base for the Avengers until it was replaced by the new facility in upstate New York, in the comics, one of the Avengers facilities is the old Stark family mansion on 5th Avenue in New York City. Could we see the Avengers, in whatever form they take in Infinity War working out of the mansion? It's possible that if there's a smaller team the decision was made to move to a smaller facility. It's also possible that Tony Stark himself has moved into the old mansion following the destruction of his beachfront home in Iron Man III. We've never actually seen where he's living since then. The house could start out simply as his home before being transformed into a new Avengers HQ once it's discovered that there is a galactic level problem.

While there's little to distinguish what the location could be based on this one image, we're partial to the Avengers Mansion idea. Tony Stark needs to be living someplace. Following the events of Captain America: Civil War a complete change of setting isn't an unlikely decision. We had a brief introduction at the beginning of Civil War in the simulation sequence with Tony Stark and his parents in a room that could be part of the mansion. Maybe we'll be seeing more going forward.

What do you think this location could be used for in Avengers: Infinity War? Do you like one of our guesses or do you have your own? Let us know what it is in the comments below.
