Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hit theaters this week, and though we're all still digesting our feelings on the movie, the film looks like its going to be another slam dunk box office wise. Like all interconnected cinematic universes, we're not quite done yet with Rogue One's characters. One, in particular, will be heading back to TV to appear on the animated Star Wars Rebels- and he should fit right in. Check out the poster below for the upcoming introduction of Saw Gerrera to Rebels.
Shared by the Twitter account Rebels Reactions, the above tweet looks to be a poster teasing an upcoming appearance of Saw Gerrera on Star Wars Rebels. The photo is of a much younger Saw than the one seen in Rogue One played by Forest Whitaker, but certain character traits still stand out --the character's scar and beard for instance, and what looks like a little Forest Whitaker's eye. The character is also wearing a variation of his Rogue One armor, which is kind off like a poor man's Darth Vader life support suit.
All we know so far is that Saw will be on the hit show, but not when or for how long. One would imagine that he'll stick around for at least a multi-episode arc, before going his separate way from the crew of the Ghost. As for what he could be up to, Saw is an extremist Rebel who resorts to more harsh levels of attacks against the Empire. In Rogue One, the character has certainly seen better days; he needs an apparatus to give him oxygen, and his body isn't exactly in one piece. His role in Rebels could illuminate how he ended up that way, while doing some nice juxtaposition with his methods versus the gentler tactics of Kadan and the crew.
Saw Gerrera was originally a character created on the show Star Wars: The Clone Wars, where he was a freedom fighter of his home planet. He became the first character to make the jump to live action in the post-Legends world of Star Wars, earning him some extra attention from hungry fans. While we can argue if Forest Whitaker was originally playing a different character and then they changed it to Saw at some point in production, it's exciting that he'll be sticking around. His role in Rogue One was a bit smaller than anticipated, so maybe he can be better utilized on television.
One quick note: In Rogue One, it was revealed that Saw essentially raised Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones). Does this mean she could get a reference, or better yet, a cameo on the show? Rebels has never shied away from teasing film characters before.
It's not known when Saw will be on Star Wars Rebels, but stick with CinemaBlend and we'll have more information as it becomes available.
