It's been 20 years since we've run in the same circles as the crew from Trainspotting. Now a new behind the scenes clip has Jonny Lee Miller speaking about exactly who Sick Boy has become over the last couple of decades. While he may not be a regular drug user anymore, he hasn't exactly turned his life around completely.
Jonny Lee Miller's Sick Boy became a pimp and drug dealer, while being an addict himself, over the course of the original Trainspotting. It would seem that while the character will have aged a bit in T2 Trainspotting, he won't necessarily have changed all that much. In a clip provided by Sony exclusively to Cinema Blend, Jonny Lee Miller says that Sick Boy is now trying to exist in a world in which he doesn't really belong. He's trying to fool himself into believing that he's successfully found his place there.
We also get a behind the scenes glimpse at a fight scene between Jonny Lee Miller and Ewan McGregor's Mark. It appears that when Renton and Sick Boy cross paths for the first time in two decades it won't go very well. To be fair, Renton did completely ditch his "friends" at the end of the last film. It appears that at least one of the crew still holds a grudge.
It's almost a little foreboding that Jonny Lee Miller says that his character is a bit "darker" in T2 Trainspotting. We wouldn't have necessarily believed it was possible to get darker than the first film. We watched those characters at their absolute lowest points in life. One would almost have to believe that the sequel would be something at least a little bit brighter. Although, if that were the case, it probably wouldn't be the movie that most want to see.
Of course, what Jonny Lee Miller has been doing for the last 20 years is somewhat different than what his character has been through. He's been spending his time on American television, primarily on the CBS modern Sherlock Holmes series Elementary. Of course, he plays a recovering drug addict there as well, so perhaps he's been preparing to reprise his role for some time.
As dark and sad as Sick Boy may be, it's clear that Jonny Lee Miller is happy to be back playing that role again. A Trainspotting sequel is one of those things that both the original creators and the fans have wanted for quite some time. They were simply waiting on the right script and now that it has apparently come, everybody is back to complete the story.
T2 Trainspotting hits theaters in the UK at the end of January. It will open in North America on March 3, in limited release, before going wider on March 10.
