Why Thor’s Haircut In Ragnarok Was Liberating For Chris Hemsworth

Thor in Ragnarok with short hair

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is gearing up to the end of its Phase Three, and there are big changes coming. The next installment in the shared universe is Thor: Ragnarok, which will unite Thor, Hulk, and Loki in a battle to escape Sakaar and stop the destruction of Asgard. The threequel will see Thor stripped of his hammer and signature golden locks. And it turns out that Thor's haircut while in captivity was actually helpful for actor Chris Hemsworth; it allowed him to explore more physically with his most iconic role.

Chris Hemsworth recently spoke to EW (via Screen Rant) about his third solo films, where he addressed how the wig was in some ways weighing down his physicality in his previous entries in the MCU. He said,

When I didn't have the wig on, I instantly felt like I could move and speak and react differently. Once we aesthetically stripped a lot of that away, it allowed the whole thing to take on a different attitude. It felt like a completely different character, and that was hugely liberating and freeing as an actor because I had become a bit bored with myself.

This feels like yet another reason to look forward to Thor: Ragnarok. While Marvel audiences may think they know every side of Chris Hemsworth's Thor by now, his upcoming threequel truly feels like a game changer for the franchise. Hemsworth will likely give a very different performance this time around, and may set him up for an exciting role in the two Avengers films that are on the way.

Ragnarok's director Taika Waititi has been teasing a much different feel for the upcoming film, especially when compared to the previous two entries. While the other movies had some comedy in Thor's fish out of water antics on Earth, they're not exactly laugh riots. But Waititi is giving Hulk and Thor their own intergalactic buddy comedy, which is a great choice for the franchise to go. And if the early trailers are to be believed, the movie will be much more akin to hyper stylized and hilarious MCU installments like Guardians of the Galaxy.

Thor's powers will be largely stripped down in Ragnarok, so his action sequences should feel much different than anything we've seen in the MCU. With Hela destroying Mjolnir in act one of the film, he'll be forced to use hand to hand combat in his various adventures in the film. The footage sees Thor rocking a pair of swords, a shield, and an axe, and he doesn't seem to have access to his powers of lightning. And with Chris Hemsworth exploring Thor's physicality without the signature hair, it seems like anything could happen in the threequel.

Thor: Ragnarok will arrive in theaters on November 3, 2017. In the meantime, you can check our 2017 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.
