Why Sebastian Stan Doesn’t Mind Not Having The Avengers Scripts

Bucky Barnes Sebastian Stan Civil War

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has come a long way since the days of the original Iron Man, with the scale of each Phase growing exponentially. Now, with Phase 3 about to culminate in The Avengers: Infinity War, things are about to become bigger and more apocalyptic than ever. That said, despite the amount of excitement and anticipation for Infinity War to hit theaters, it turns out that Captain America: Civil War actor Sebastian Stan has not even read the film's full script -- and he doesn't mind, because that mentality works for his character. The Winter Soldier actor explained:

I didn't read a script for the last movie, so I was kind of in the dark. Which is always ok for The Winter Soldier. I think there's just an element of trust, it's a family system and at this point, I feel like between the writers and the Russos everyone kind of guesses their next move so to speak and I feel like they know very well what I'm going to be bringing.

As a former cryogenically frozen assassin who can be turned on simply by stating a few code words, not knowing everything about Infinity War actually seems to help Sebastian Stan perform as Bucky Barnes in the MCU. Bucky has so many internal issues that he has to focus on at the moment that it would almost feel unconvincing for him to have a firm grasp on every nitty-gritty detail of Thanos' invasion. By keeping himself in the dark with regards to Infinity War's script and story, Stan can also keep Bucky in a similar headspace, and trust the film's directors to maintain the ship's course.

Sebastian Stan's comments to Collider at the Toronto International Film Festival definitely seem to echo recent remarks that he has made about his own status as a member of the giant Marvel machine. Likening himself to Game of Thrones' Jon Snow during the Battle of the Bastards, Stan recently explained that performing as Bucky in the MCU is an exercise in facing off against impossible odds and simply doing the best he can. The entire Infinity War process is far bigger than any single actor, so it is not his place to know where the Russos intend to take this story.

Of course, we will have to wait and see if The Avengers: Infinity War is the next place that we will see Bucky Barnes. The last MCU adventure to premiere before the next Avengers movie is the Wakanda-based Black Panther, and with Bucky currently on ice in T'Challa's home country, it seems entirely possible that he could be thawed out at some point to help out before Thanos and his minions roll into town.

Sebastian Stan will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Bucky Barnes when The Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters next summer on May 4, 2018. Here's everything that we currently know about the upcoming Marvel epic!
