The Surprising Cameo Thor: Ragnarok May Have

Chris Hemsworth in Thor: Ragnarok

WARNING: Potentially MAJOR SPOILERS ahead for Thor: Ragnarok!

While Stan Lee is the undisputed cameo king of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the franchise has recruited a number of actors over the years to make quick appearances. For instance, the late and great Harry Dean Stanton popped up in The Avengers as a security guard who witnessed The Hulk crashing from the sky and transforming back into Bruce Banner. Well, Thor: Ragnarok is next up on the MCU slate, and if a new rumor is to be believed, then moviegoers will be treated to Matt Damon gracing the screen as an Asgardian performer. Here's how Damon's scene reportedly unfolds, according to the source:

There's a scene set on Asgard in which we watch an Asgardian theater production that essentially recounts the entirety of Thor 1, like as a play. And in this theater piece, the role of Loki is played by an Asgardian actor played by Matt Damon.

The folks over at the Weekly Planet podcast claim to know someone who's seen "a significant portion" of Thor: Ragnarok, and from this person, they learned the above information about Matt Damon's supposed involvement in the movie. Evidently Asgard still has a flourishing theater scene, and as Ragnarok kicks off, one of the productions the citizens can check out is an adaptation of Thor's exploits from just a few years ago, from his banishment to Earth to fighting Loki on the Bifrost Bridge. If Ben Affleck wasn't already lending his talents to the DCEU as Batman, I'd wonder if Marvel had gotten him to play Thor in this Asgardian production opposite Damon's Loki.

Matt Damon in Jason Bourne

It goes without saying that you should take this rumor with a grain of salt, but the idea of Matt Damon being thrown into the MCU for a simple cameo in Thor: Ragnarok is puzzling. On the one hand, such a move could prevent him from being able to play a more important character in this franchise. Granted, other actors have played more than one role in the MCU, like Kenneth Choi and Laura Haddock, but they're not the household names that Damon is, so casual moviegoers probably won't remember where they appeared before. On the other hand, the idea of having an A-list actor in such a small role is amusing. If it wasn't for the fact that Cate Blanchett's Hela will invade Asgard during Thor: Ragnarok and put the whole civilization in jeopardy by trying to unleash the apocalyptic Ragnarok event, I'd wonder if Damon's actor character would eventually be nominated for the Asgardian equivalent of a Tony.

With or without Matt Damon, Thor: Ragnarok storms into theaters on November 3. You can also read through our 2017 movie premiere guide to see what else is being released later this year.
