The Ghostbusters made their return to the silver screen last year and, on the heels of that resurgence, an animated film exploring the exploits of these comedic heroes is officially in development. However, this animated project will supposedly be unlike any of the films that preceded it, and that is because it will reportedly tell the iconic Ghostbusters story from the point of view of the ghosts being busted.
According to a new rumor circulated by That Hashtag Show, the upcoming Ghostbusters animated film (directed by Fletcher Moules) will make a significant change to how it tells its story. Rather than focus on the titular team's quest to vanquish all of New York City's paranormal creatures, the film will actually tell the story from the ghost's side of events. By doing this, the movie will frame the exploits of the heroes in a new light as it examines what a ghost may feel when it roams the haunted locales of the city, as well as what it feels it gets hit with a proton pack. It will almost certainly add an entirely new dimension to Slimer, right?
Beyond that, we are also still waiting to learn the core premise of the upcoming animated movie as well. It is unclear if the story will be an entirely new tale altogether or a retelling of one of the three Ghostbusters films that have already been released. Smart money would bet on the probability of an original story, as a new pass at the material will allow them to scale up and try visual elements that may not have been entirely possible in a live-action setting.
At this point, one thing that we absolutely do not know is which Ghostbusters team the upcoming animated feature will follow. There's a clear case to be made that the original lineup would get our collective nostalgia fired up. That said, there's arguably an equally valid argument to be made that the new team deserves to take front and center. It could go either way.
This isn't the first time that the Ghostbusters have made the jump to animation. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, there was a similar TV series called The Real Ghostbusters, which channeled the spirit of the films into a much goofier animated kids show. Let's just hope that the upcoming animated film can generate that same degree of nostalgia and deliver the laughs that we have all come to expect.
