Idris Elba Wants A Bigger Role With Marvel

Idris Elba Heimdall Thor

Idris Elba has become a fairly big name in Hollywood in recent years, however, his part within one of films' biggest series, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is still fairly small. This is something the actor would like to change. While Elba hasn't always had the nicest things to say about his work on the Thor films, he does admit that he wishes he had a larger presence within the MCU. According to Elba...

It's been great, but I kinda think I need a bit more. I want to be a superhero. I like the idea of that.

Idris Elba admits to Entertainment Weekly that he likes the fact that his role as Heimdall in the Thor films has been small, as it has allowed him to take other projects that he wants to do, but it seems that, at the same time, he would be more than happy to take on a bigger role if it were offered to him. He wishes he had a character that was a larger part of the MCU, which could mean he'd like to see Heimdall do more, but could also mean he'd be open to taking on an additional MCU character that had more to do.

Thus far, while we've seen the occasional recasting within the MCU, we have yet to say any significant actors take on more than one role. We've heard that Marvel isn't entirely against the idea, so it could happen, but thus far everybody who has joined the MCU has stayed within their particular sphere.

We're certainly in favor of this. Idris Elba has proven himself to be a stellar actor and we'd love to see him do more within the MCU. Whether that means a future Thor movie where Heimdall is a bigger part of the adventure, or bringing him in as a new character, either way could work.

And indications are that opportunities might be just around the corner. The impression that we're getting is that Phase 4 of the MCU will see a new focus on the cosmic universe, which would seem to imply a bunch of new characters are on the way, and those characters will require actors to play them. Maybe there will be an opportunity for Idris Elba to do more in the coming years.

As to why Idris Elba wants to take on a larger role in the MCU, it seems to be the simple fact that he enjoys superhero movies. While many have criticized the prominent role the genre has taken, Elba doesn't agree...

I've never felt that way. Weirdly enough, I've got like the Peter Pan syndrome when it comes to the kinds of films I like.

We certainly like them too, which makes us excited to see Idris Elba return as Heimdall in next month's Thor: Ragnarok. Time will tell if Marvel will have more for him to do within their Cinematic Universe.
