Nelson Mandela Is Out Of The Hospital
Former South African President Nelson Mandela was released from the hospital today. The ninety-three-year-old entered the facility yesterday to see a specialist about a lingering abdominal problem. The doctor performed a diagnostic procedure during which a camera was inserted into the patient’s abdomen, but no irregularities of note were found. As a result, the retired politician was sent on his way this morning, accompanied by a motorcade fit for someone so beloved.
According to The New York Times, the positive update came during a press conference held today by current South African President Jacob Zuma. The former leader has spent the past few years living a far quieter life than he did post-Apartheid, but sources close to the situation have long indicated that’s been more a matter of health than anything else.
President Mandela lived in a prison cell for twenty-seven years. He was convicted on sabotage charges related to his vocal condemnation of governmental racism in South Africa. He was finally freed in 1990, and rather than revenge, he pushed for understanding and unity. Elected President in 1994, he served until 1999 and became a source of inspiration for millions. His direct effect on world politics may not be as great as it once was, but his shadow still lingers over the country he loves.
Pop Blend wishes President Mandela a safe and healthy recovery. He’s already accomplished more than most men in his ninety-three years, but it would still be nice to see his smiling face for another decade.
