The US Navy has a plane that launches from a submarine. Sometimes I hear about things and feel like an old man as I say to myself, “The world we live in.” This is often accompanied by a slight shake of the head and a quick sip of scotch. Working with Lockheed Martin the US Navy reconverted many of their Ohio class nuclear submarines. Out of that Cormorant was born.
The plane launches from a submarine when the missile bay opens and the plane itself pops out naturally. It eventually breaks the surface of the water and the turbo-fan engine starts up and flight begins. The craft is unmanned and used mainly for reconnaissance and troop support. When the mission is over the engine shuts off, a parachute deploys and the plane falls back into the water where it is retrieved.
