A PSP Phone, or something similar, may be on the way. OK, maybe not because the rumor starts from a newly filed Sony patent. And patents don’t necessarily mean real products are on the way. But is Sony is planning something it makes sense that it would happen on the PSP platform. The patent in question describes “digital tactile pixels” that use touch response and use vibration to provide feedback. The patent also belongs to Sony Computer Entertainment, the division behind Playstation.
Sure this could be another brand new phone, but the device is designed to be a gaming machine along with web browser. Now it would be fairly stupid of Sony to segment its already fledgling portable gaming device by competing with itself. I doubt this will be a PSP update, but rather the PSP 2. We’re at the patent stage so I’d expect to see something unveiled at whatever E3 equivalent we have in 2009.
