This one is for the weather watchers and star gazers out there. Tomorrow there will the first total eclipse of the sun since March 29, 2006. Not that all of us will be able to see it, as eclipses are perceivable only if you’re at the right location. It’s not like some dark energy envelopes the sun for a bit, you’re just getting the view blocked by the moon for a bit.
This eclipse will start in Nunavut, a northern province of Canada, and will sweep across the globe on a narrow path that ends in northern China. The Exploratorium plans to webcast the event live tomorrow. Be quick though, because the eclipse will only last seconds as it zips on by. It is the only opportunity you’ll have to see the sun’s corona. The corona, as you’ll likely remember from high school science, is the sun’s outer atmosphere that is ridiculously hot and reaches about 620,000 miles from the star’s surface.
