The Defenders Just Added Another Major Character

When Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist all team up in The Defenders next year, they won't be far away from close friends and allies. Over the last week, the upcoming miniseries has announced that many of the supporting characters from the previous Marvel Netflix shows will appear. Well, we can add another name to the mix, as Elektra from Daredevil Season 2 will also be back for that round of MCU Netflix action.

The Defenders social media accounts confirmed earlier today that Elodie Yung will reprise Elektra Natchios, meaning she'll probably reunite with Matt Murdock at some point. Elektra is the fifth supporting Daredevil character to join the miniseries, following behind Foggy Nelson, Karen Page, Claire Temple and Stick. Including the four main heroes and Sigourney Weaver as the main villain, that brings the number of Defenders cast members officially announced so far to fifteen, and you can guarantee there will be plenty more added soon.

Spoilers for Daredevil Season 2 are ahead!

What makes Elektra's involvement in The Defenders more notable than the other supporting players announced so far is that when we last saw her, she was dead. In the Daredevil Season 2 finale, Elektra gave her life to save Matt Murdock from The Hand during that climactic rooftop showdown. However, those supernatural ninjas weren't done with her by a long shot. It was revealed earlier in the season that The Hand believed Elektra to be a Black Sky, an individual who was destined to become the organization's leader. After she was buried by Matt and Stick, The Hand dug her body out of the grave and placed it in a stone sarcophagus. The ending may have been ambiguous to some viewers unfamiliar with the Daredevil mythos, but longtime fans of the Man Without Fear knew that Elektra's resurrection was imminent.

So rather than having to wait until Daredevil Season 3 to have Elektra back in the game, we'll see her brought back to life fully in The Defenders. Unfortunately, The Hand may have a way to control her once her heart is beating again, which would mean she'd be a villain at first. If that's the case, will Matt Murdock and the other Defenders have to use a strange mystical process (like purifying her soul) to stop Elektra, or it will be easier to snap her back to her normal self in the MCU? It will be a long time until that question is answered, but one thing is certain: Matt seeing (sorry, poor choice of words) Elektra back among the living will throw him for a loop.

The Defenders will premiere on Netflix sometime in 2017 following Iron Fist's release. Stay tuned for more updates on its progress, and let us know what you think of Elektra's addition in the comments below.
