Supergirl has introduced a wide variety of crazy characters over its first season and a half on the air, and several of them have been villains with powers so unique that they could actually do damage to the Girl of Steel. Of course, Supergirl almost always manages to put her bad guys away, and many of her villains don't have the chance to become repeat offenders. Soon, however, Kara will face off once more against two of her most dastardly villains to date, as Metallo and Livewire will both be back to wreak havoc when the second season returns.
Kara and Co. have spent a great deal of time in Season 2 trying to fight back against the shadowy, anti-alien organization known as Cadmus. The group has literally crafted a number of bad guys specifically to try and take down Supergirl, and it was one of Cadmus' very first creations this season that came very close to killing Kara: Metallo. And his return is quite intriguing indeed.
Metallo was originally an assassin by the name of John Corben. When he was fatally wounded after a failed attempt to kill Lena Luthor, Cadmus saved his life by implanting him with a heart made of Kryptonite. He was given a new mission and a new name: as Metallo, he would hunt and try to kill Supergirl and Superman. The Super cousins nearly died a couple of times before they finally teamed up with Alex and Martian Manhunter to take down the Metallo threat. Kara removed his Kryptonite heart and seemingly killed him. Interestingly, TVLine indicates that the Metallo that will turn up in the second half of Season 2 will be the former John Corben, played once more by Frederick Schmidt. Evidently, Cadmus found a way to bring Metallo 1.0 back to life instead of building a brand new villain from a fresh host.
On the flip side, the return of Brit Morgan as Livewire means that Kara will face at least one major villain in the second half of Season 2 that doesn't have a Cadmus origin. In fact, Livewire made her Supergirl debut way back in the beginning of Season 1 before Kara knew anything about Cadmus. She was one of Kara's first enemies, and we can bet that she has something nasty in store for her in their next battle.
Livewire has actually gone after Supergirl for vengeance once already when she escaped prison and teamed up with Silver Banshee and try to take out the Girl of Steel. Unfortunately for Livewire and Silver Banshee, they happened to attack during the same couple of days that Barry Allen - A.K.A. the Flash - was visiting from Earth-1. Livewire was defeated and locked away in a special prison that would prevent her from using her powers to control electricity on the innocent. Until now, anyway.
To return for the second half of Season 2, Livewire will likely either escape from prison or be broken out of prison. Who knows? If Cadmus' creations keep failing to take out Supergirl, they may decide to give one of her old nemeses another try.
Supergirl is currently on winter hiatus, so it will be a while before we get to see either Metallo or Livewire make their way back to National City.
