CBS Eye Logo Turns 60 Tomorrow

CBS has changed a lot over the years, moving from a radio network to a TV network, from black and white TV to color, all while changing spots in the network ratings. One thing that has remained untouched over the years is the CBS Eye logo, first introduced during commercial breaks on October 20, 1951. Sixty years later, the Eye is still the company’s most recognizable image.

Sixty years with one identity is certainly something to celebrate, and CBS plans to go all out. Taking a cue from Google’s homepage on holidays, CBS.com and CBSNews.com are going retro tomorrow, replacing the regular logo with the logo of the fifties. Eye lovers will also be able to check out some photo essays on both websites of the various versions of the Eye over the years. If you can’t wait until tomorrow, there’s a nice sample size over at THR.

But that’s not all. If you watch CBS on Thursdays, you’ll be able to see a cute little retro network image in the corner of the screen with the Eye and its creation date. Secondly, primetime will kick off with a short segment dedicated to the Eye’s birthday. How cute is that? Since I don’t watch The Big Bang Theory, The Mentalist, Rules of Engagement, or Person of Interest, I’m probably going to miss all the fuss. Still, kudos to the network for throwing a proper celebration for the symbol that has made CBS recognizable all over the world.
