Defiance Season 1 Will Hit Blu-ray And DVD In October

Syfy’s Defiance hit the network’s schedule this spring with a bang, pulling in great ratings (at least for Syfy’s recent standards) and putting the powerful in the network’s Powerful Mondays programming block. The show will be returning for a second season, but new episodes aren’t expected to hit the schedule until sometime in 2014. The good news is that we won’t have to wait too long to revisit episodes of the series. Defiance: Season 1 will hit Blu-ray and DVD on October 15, 2013.

The first season of Defiance hit the schedule this spring and opened up the opportunity for Syfy to pursue a bigger budget science fiction endeavor, featuring several races of aliens living among humans on a war torn Earth in the year 2046. Additionally, Defiance offers a unique platform for gamers to invest in a related television series and vice versa. The video game related to the show opened on three platforms simultaneously and helps to expand the world of Defiance and engage fans on another level with the series. A contest running through the end of the month will even allow one of the top ten gamers’ characters to appear on the TV show next season, bridging the gap between the game and the show even further.

Universal Studios Home Entertainment is putting together the Blu-ray and DVD sets for Season 1, and the cover art is similar to a lot of the promo shots of leads Grant Bowler, Stephanie Leonidas, and Julie Benz we’ve seen all season. This won’t be the only option, though, for fans who are super invested in the series. Universal is also promising a limited edition set featuring “collectible lenticular packaging.” Currently, we don’t have a look at exactly what the special edition will entail, but keep your eyes posted in the coming weeks if you have any interest in the limited edition copy.

The good news is that whether you opt to shell out for a Blu-ray or DVD copy of Defiance: Season 1, you’ll be getting the same bonus features. The bad news is that the disc probably won’t be as chock full of extras as fans might like, although some of the usually suspects will show up on the disc, including deleted scenes and a making of featurette. We’re still a ways away from the set’s October release date, and it isn’t even available for pre-order, yet, but you can check out the full list of bonus features, below.

Defiance Blu-ray and DVD Bonus Features

  • Deleted Scenes
  • Gag Reel
  • Defiance: A Transmedia Revolution”
  • “Making Defiance

Syfy has plans to begin airing Season 2 of Defiance in 2014. So far, not a ton of details have emerged about the new season, but thanks to the show’s Comic-Con panel, we do know Doc Yewll will be featured prominently. Another interesting tidbit is that the show plans to expand beyond the city of Defiance next year, hitting up other locales, including Los Angeles.
