Easy A Director Will Gluck Lands New Comedy At ABC

In the last couple of years, Will Gluck has brought us films starring pop culture savvy protagonists in outside-the-box situations. Easy A and Friends with Benefits were both box office successes. Usually when a director is doing well, he or she will ride the tide for as long as it lasts. Which is why it was a surprise when Gluck announced an abrupt switchover. Gluck’s newest project will pit him as a writer…for a television program.

The single camera comedy is being kept pretty well under wraps, other than to leak the as-yet untitled program is headed to ABC. According to Deadline, word on the street has it the show will be about an angel living among us. Well, living among citizens of New York City. If the premise is correct, the new show certainly fits Gluck’s love for an outside-the box situation. Let’s hope the new comedy keeps Gluck’s pop culture sensibility, too. I can only imagine how an angel would stand out in a conversation.

If Gluck’s move from film to television seems completely surprising, it needn’t be. He began his career as a writer working on projects including the series Working and The John Larroquette show. He also owns a company that sold two other pilots recently, so it wasn’t as if he was totally segregated from television and then returned on a whim. My guess is he had a good idea and decided to roll with it. Not a bad idea, as long as he rolled something close to the hard six.
