In the last 2014 scene of The Flash, viewers watched as Harrison Wells attached the tachyon particle device to the Reverse-Flash costume and spoke in that disturbing, disguised voice, seemingly confirming that he is the yellow-suited speedster. However, there are still numerous questions surrounding this revelation, like how Reverse-Flash and Wells were able to be in the same room, or if there could even be another person with the Reverse-Flash powers. It may be a while until we get more answers on this front, but according to series star Grant Gustin, The Flash’s May finale will deliver a surprise so incredible that he guarantees fans won’t see it coming.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gustin mentioned that there is still more to find out about the Reverse-Flash’s identity that will “shock the audience,” and the biggest revelation will come during the Season 1 finale. Said Gustin:
“There’s a big twist that even surprised me. I’ve seen all the predictions online. No one has predicted the big twist that’s coming at the end of this season.”
This isn’t the first time that Gustin has made a declarative statement like this. In late November, he said that everyone’s theories concerning the Reverse-Flash were nowhere close to what is actually going on. Although no information has been released yet regarding the Season 1 finale, it stands to reason that there will be another intense showdown between Barry and his twisted doppelgänger, whether it’s Harrison Wells under the yellow mask or someone else. Considering that the series was recently renewed for another season, it’s also possible the writers will take cues from Arrow and add another cliffhanger element to be followed up on in Season 2, like setting up a new main antagonist or leaving Barry in an unusual predicament.
Ignoring Gustin’s bold claim, if I had to wager to a guess regarding this big twist, I’d say it has something to do with Eddie Thawne. It’s been mentioned repeatedly that Eddie’s path on the show is setting him up for something big, and executive producer Andrew Kreisberg said that it was no accident that Eddie shares the last name as Eobard Thawne, a.k.a. Barry Allen’s nemesis Professor Zoom from the comics.
Taking all this into account, one trajectory the show might head towards is revealing that the Reverse-Flash that Barry fought in “The Man In The Yellow Suit” was a future version of Eddie that’s now a villain and somehow working with Wells. This would both foreshadow present-day Eddie’s eventual evil turn and concretely set up future Eddie as Barry’s main arch-nemesis. Hey, it may not be the most original idea, but at least it’s logical.
