Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia - Kitten Mittens

By Doug Norrie: 2009-11-05 22:01:34
Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia - Kitten Mittens Let me start of by saying that Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia has been absolutely crushing it this season. Whether it’s performing interventions, taking road trips, or trying to get in to the World Series through an underground tunnel, Always Sunny isn’t suffering from the inconsistency that plagued it last season.

Tonight’s episode might have been the best one of the year. “Kitten Mittens” continued the idiotic tour de force the gang has been exhibiting. You almost have to wonder why the gang never decided to merchandise before. In the archive of their get-rich-quick schemes, merchandising seems the most logical. Maybe it makes too much sense and that’s why they come up with such ideas as Kitten Mittons (sic), Paddy’s thongs, a green stress ball (actually just a raw egg) and the dicktowel (available at dicktowel.com**).

** Of all these ideas I would probably bet on the dicktowel to actually go somewhere. My wife would love this kind of thing hanging in our bathroom.

You have to envy the gang’s blind enthusiasm in the face of actual logic and thought. They have ideas and dreams but just no clear way to ever make them happen. It’s the classic case of not seeing the forest for the trees, when in this case the forest is brains and the trees are just hops-infested dreams of deluded grandeur. But tonight’s episode proved that even when an idea like Kitten Mittens actually has legs (pun intended) they don’t know how to hold on to the success. In this case they just signed their rights away to a frustrated lawyer, and even Mac’s eating-the-contract-to-sidestep-the-law couldn’t save the day.

Basically, “Kitten Mittens,” was a laughfest. I don’t know another way to put it. It was a complete episode that worked from beginning to end. There were one-liners galore with Dennis wanting to “Frame Bang” the lawyer’s wife and Charlie’s continuing self-styling as a man of the law. Put it this way, the Shotgun idea was classic, and barely gets a mention at the end because the rest of the episode was so fantastic.

It’s Always Sunny is a show, five seasons in, still getting better. This is no easy feat for a show with only five characters set in an empty bar. At this point it needs to be considered as one of the funniest shows on television .

Other thoughts and highlights:
- Some great use of setting for the comedy tonight. Example: Charlie and Dee staking out the lawyer in the lawyer’s own car made for hilarious character movement. Rarely does the driver seem to sneak up on the people waiting in the car.
- I was so happy Dennis and Mac acknowledged Frank’s idea as just a water gun, and yet they still didn’t want to work with the already developed technology. Kudos for them wanting to dispense shots from an actual gun.
