The Obscene Way Kathy Bates Treated A 2015 Golden Globe
You never know what is going to happen when you get a bunch of award winners into a room with one another, but in the case of the 2015 Golden Globes after parties, we know one weirdly obscene thing that happened. Recently, Transparent creator and Golden Globes winner Jill Soloway showed up at Tiny Fey and Amy Poehler’s after party, where she would up talking to Kathy Bates. Obviously, someone who has just won a Golden Globe is going to carry that sucker around, and Bates ended up grabbing the statue and doing this:
Clearly, Solloway had no problem with this, as she related the news story to THR a few days later. However, can you imagine a roomful of comedians and A-level actors and actresses lounging around and occasionally doing lewd things with the Golden Globe trophies that they worked so hard to earn? It seems a great way to have laughs but also a germ nightmare. It’s also a reminder that no matter how rich, famous and old people get, the majority of us can’t help but laugh at a well-endowed dick joke.
Some people might be surprised that Kathy Bates was in on these shenanigans, but actually, she has proven to be a pretty wild lady in the past. She got super high on the set of Tammy with Susan Sarandon and Melissa McCarthy, which sounds like more fun than anyone should legally (or illegally) be allowed to have. Believe me, she’s seen things; so, licking a phallic statue alongside comedians isn’t exactly taking things too far.
While the comedians cracked dick jokes the night of the Golden Globes, a lot of others used the platform as a way to talk about more serious subjects. Downton Abbey’s Joanne Froggatt used her big win to discuss being a voice for rape victims. Maggie Gyllenhaal used her win to talk about the wealth of roles available to women in the TV realm right now. And Michael Keaton was so exhaulted about his win, he choked up a bit onstage and then gave one of the most gracious speeches of the night. There are plenty of behind-the-scenes Globes moments that are poignant, as well.
So, the Globes are not all about goofing around and red carpet after parties. But when they are, it can get obscene. It kind of makes me wonder what winners do with their Super Bowl rings when the cameras aren’t rolling. Or what shenanigans hockey players get up to during their day with the Stanley Cup.
