Premium Cable Channels: Great Shows But Worth The Cost?

By Kelly West: 2008-08-06 22:26:56
Premium Cable Channels: Great Shows But Worth The Cost? A couple of months ago, I broke up with HBO. Me and the premium cable network had been together on and off for years but I started to realize that the little time I was spending with the network wasn’t worth what it was costing me financially. Plus it started to seem like the Home Box Office was taking the “Box” portion of its title a bit too literally. It felt like every time I turned on HBO to see what was on, I found boxing. I’d rather watch soap operas than boxing (and soap operas tend to give me an intensely strong urge to perform a Joker-like pencil trick on myself - just to give you a bit of perspective on my tolerance for the genre). So I dumped HBO. The relationship was getting tired and too costly to continue.

Being without a premium cable network, I set out to find other ways to occupy my couch-warming time. I started regularly visiting my local Red Box but dollar-movies can only sustain me for so long. I feel like I’ve become recently single and enjoying the freedom to really explore my options. See what’s out there. I recently caught the pilot episode of Showtime’s Californication on iTunes and fell instantly in love with David Duchovny’s dry wit. I’ve also started watching Weeds on Blu-ray and now I’m thinking I might want to see Showtime exclusively. And then there’s Starz. I haven’t subscribed to Starz in years but I have caught a couple of episodes of Head Case, which I enjoyed and come October, the small-screen version of Crash will be premiering. So I’m thinking it might be time to give that network another shot.

And, while I haven’t missed HBO since I dumped it, Entourage is returning and something tells me, come September I’m going to be craving some Drama (of the Johnny variety – Victory!). So at this point, I’m completely undecided. Should I take HBO back and hope that Entourage will be enough to bring back the old spark I once had with the network? Or should I give Showtime and/or Starz a try? Or do I just forget the whole premium cable thing and just enjoy the flood of new and returning series that’s about to hit once summer winds down?

Feel free to comment with your thoughts about premium cable channels. If you subscribe, which channel(s) do you get and do you think it’s worth the cost? If you don’t subscribe to any, why not? Is it the cost or the lack of time/interest in what the premium networks have to offer?

I switch from Showtime and HBO. I'll pick up showtime just before my shows start to come back, Weeds & Penn & Teller just to name a few. But once those few shows i like are over i drop it. Same goes for HBO, I like Big Love and a few others, but once they are over so is HBO.

So i guess you could consider them my whores, i pay them a little money for a while, get what i want and drop there ass until i need my fix the next year.

As for Cinemax why waste your time on three channels of soft porn when you can have one channel of the real thing - Playboy. Also it's about the same price now since the price drop.

Starz I might get sometimes during the summer just for the movies. But it's been years since i've done that.

  1. Mack Says:

Showtime is the way to go. Honestly. I have HBO too, but choosing between the two wouldn't even be a competition right now.

Californication, Dexter, Weeds, The Tudors, Penn & Teller.

  1. Joe Says:

I'd consider HBO again if and only if they sign a legal agreement with me to stopp canceling shows before their individual payoff's I.E. Carnivale and Deadwood. Until then I can't in my right mind pay that much a month for "Real Sports". My toe leaves a better taste in your mouth!

  1. Jim Says:

Showtime is now the best premium channel. They have the best series (Dexter, Weeds, Tudors, Brotherhood). Brotherhood BTW is an overlooked series that I like better than Sopranos, it's much more realistic and the characters are more real to me. Hopefully it won't get cancelled..
HBO has fallen behind in quality of series, but usually has the bigger blockbuster movies, but most of them we've already seen...
I have HBO and Showtime (Showtime mainly for their great series, HBO for more movie selections), but if I had to choose between the I would keep Showtime.
I'm tempted to try Starz for movies, but I'm trying Netflix instead.

As far as the cost, not sure in today's economy if I should be spending my money on any of them, and I may have to give something up soon..

I think it is unfair that Comcast pushes HBO and Starz, you can't even find Showtime listed on their website.. you have to ask for it.
