New Ripper Street Preview Is Full Of Violence And Danger

BBC One’s miniseries, Ripper Street, only recently earned a spot in BBC America’s Dramaville lineup, with new episodes airing on Saturdays. The ensemble drama is set in Whitechapel, England in the months following the famed Jack the Ripper killings. With a murderer on the loose, things in the area are anything but settled. If you’ve been keeping up with the series, or just want to check out what it’s about, we have a short preview from this week’s Episode 2 for audiences.

In the clip, Brothel Madam Long Susan has to use her wiles to avoid the clutches of a villainous man named Carmichael. Interestingly, the above clip is extremely stylistic, shot in slow motion so that the audience can focus on the details of the gambling hall and take in the whole scene. Additionally, the segment is not dialogue-heavy, so when our gambling master gets angry, his voice booms from the screen to full effect. We’ve seen plenty of period dramas on television before, many of which have been British imports, but I love that the Madam is willing and able to fight for herself, even if she does need a little help at the end.

Ripper Street certainly doesn’t shy away from violence, but if you liked what you caught, you can catch the full episode of “In My Protection” on Saturday, January 26 at 9 p.m. ET on BBC America. Ripper Street stars Matthew Macfadyen, Jerome Flynn, Adam Rothenberg, and MyAnna Buring. Saturday’s episode also features Joseph Gilgun as Carmichael.
