TV Recap: Project Runway - Rings Of Glory

TV Recap: Project Runway - Rings Of Glory Previously: Even though she wasn’t the one who bored Nina and Blayne made the exact same dress except even uglier, Emily was out. Kenley, who reimagined the Golden Girls’ lawn furniture into a dress, won the challenge.

It looks like the designers are going on a little field trip. Heidi sends them downstairs to meet with Tim, who loads them all into a van. Hey, big freakin’ surprise! This week’s challenge is Olympic-themed. While at first glance, this may seem like a patriotic choice, it is important to realize that Project Runway is still on Bravo, which is an NBC Universal company and the Olympics are being aired on NBC. Do you smell that? That’s the smell of synergy.

Anyway, Apolo Anton Ohno, who won Dancing With the Stars and apparently a couple of medals in the Winter Olympics, is the guest judge. He gives the designers their challenge, which is to create a look for the U.S. Olympic team for the opening ceremonies of the summer games.

Ugh. So not only is this challenge pandering to their corporate overlords, but it’s a total copout. Despite the fact that opening ceremonies involve both men’s and women’s clothing, they’re only designing women’s clothing. I guess they learned from last season’s Tiki Barber fiasco that men’s clothing is just a bit too difficult.

The designers get to walk around the armory and have 30 minutes to sketch. They then get 30 minutes at Mood to buy fabric. Drama abounds when Keith mistakenly thinks Terri’s fabric is his and starts cutting from it. She is highly offended by this act of thievery, while I’m just offended at the fact that they’re fighting over hideous pink fabric.

They’re back at Parsons and the designers are talking about what high school sports they played. Stella was a dancuh who now loves leathuh. Joe who gleefully tells us that he played football in high school, also gleefully tells us that he’s planning on making a skort, which as he helpfully points out, is a skirt/short. The front is the skirt and the back is shorts, which basically makes it the mullet of fashion.

So people are giving Stella a lot of crap for her black outfit, but I’ve actually got to side with her here. Her outfit is black with a red, silver and blue trim. She says that American athletes are powerhouses and I’ve got to say that I like where she’s going with this. It’s a really strong, intimidating look and I think it’s pretty badass.

So I’m kind of worried about the majority of these designs. They don’t so much look like designs Olympians would wear, as they do Pan-Am stewardess uniforms from 1965. They’re confusing. Seriously, there are a lot of polka dots and scarves. I don’t really understand it.

Runway:

Korto’s outfit runs into the problem that Tim alluded to and I think a lot of the designers are going to have issues with: Olympians have muscles. Kortos high-waisted, wide-legged pants are going to be awkward enough, but the matching bolero jacket? Now that’s some bad news.

Disco Suede designed a white, sleeveless mock turtle neck with what looks like a cheerleader’s skirt. The women he’s supposed to be dressing are world-class athletes. I would honestly say that this outfit is misogynistic, if I thought he was smart enough to actually be making a statement with this design.

Kelli designed a cute blue skirt with white piping and a red shirt with white polka dots. It’s completely inappropriate for the challenge, but it’s a nice design.

Joe’s design is the first thing that looks mildly sports-inspired. It’s the dreaded skort with a matching white jacket. The skort says USA on it and the outfit as a whole is somewhat plausible.

Leanne makes a white short with a weird sleeveless white jacket with an overwhelming red and blue collar. It looks like it would be fit for a day on a yacht.

Daniel made a blue cocktail dress with red piping and buttons. Seriously, did any of these people understand the challenge even a little bit?

Jerell’s design takes the cake though. He listened to Tim and made the stripes on his skirt vertical instead of horizontal, but he paired it with a striped shirt, a polka dotted scarf and a ridiculous polka dotted hat. The entire outfit is ludicrous.

Stella really shot herself in the foot when she made a belly button cutout in her jacket, but seeing the final piece, I stand by my earlier assessment. It’s badass and compared to the ridiculous tea time outfits the rest of the designers made, it actually fits the challenge really well.

Keith used to be a competitive gymnast, so he always wanted to compete in the Olympics. I wonder how he would feel about going to the Olympics in a ruffled skirt like the one he made. Probably not good.

Terri ended up making patriotic office wear. She has a white pant with a navy blue pinstriped blazer. She also, like every other freaking designer, has a scarf.

Jennifer’s gold and white striped skirt is cute, as is the cropped sweater. However, the cropped sweater involves what look like brooches. This is another design that seems completely out of context to me.

Blayne’s design is a little out there, but actually fits more than most of them. It’s a white pant with a white one-sleeved shirt that has some nice red and blue detailing.

Kenley made a plaid pencil skirt. PLAID.

Judging:

Heidi calls the following designers forward: Disco Suede, Kelli, Leanne, Stella, Keith, Blayne, and Kenley. They are all safe and Heidi tells them to leave. The six remaining designers have the highest and lowest scores. Nina loves the fact that Terri offered versatility. Heidi doesn’t see “Olympic” or “America” in Jennifer’s design. Nina says it’s too girly and almost looks silly. Heidi loves Joe’s zippers and Nina thinks the athletic details are great. Apollo doesn’t see anything Olympic about Daniel’s outfit, while Nina says it’s irrelevant. Nina thinks Korto’s design is chic, but I still believe that the women who would actually be wearing this would have a very different opinion. Nina is puzzled by Jerell’s design. Everyone is pretty much equally baffled.

Heidi brings the designers back out. First things first, she makes a horrible mistake by not choosing Joe as the winner, instead telling him to leave the runway and declaring Korto and her “good in theory but not when you put it on an Olympic swimmer” design the winner. She has immunity for the next challenge. Terri is also safe for this week, as is Jerell.

It’s down to Jennifer and Daniel. Heidi tells Daniel that he missed the challenge completely and Jennifer that she’s stuck in the past as a designer. Jennifer is out, while Daniel is safe. I’m pretty ambivalent about her auf-ing, but I still really think Joe or Stella should have won.

Next week: They’re designing for Brooke Shields and something looks like a “big sweet potato!”
