The Vampire Diaries Season 5 Preview Teases Romance And Doppelgangers

A lot happened during the Season 4 finale of The Vampire Diaries. Elena and Damon finally stopped bothering to avoid their sexual tension. Meanwhile, Elena also got up to some serious kick-ass antics finally turning her doppelgänger Katherine, into a human. That didn’t even prove to be half the fun as another look-a-like entered the plotline and wreaked some havoc on Stefan. The whole thing should be leading up to a pretty explosive introductory episode in Season 5, and the CW has finally put together a promo hinting at some new plotlines.

If you missed out on the Season 4 finale, the new promo should put you up to speed, showing Silas meeting up with Stefan and disposing of him. We also get to see Damon and Elena’s romance, but I particularly like the distaste on Damon’s face when he is featured in a scene with a disheveled-looking Katherine, who notes “it’s been a long summer.” She's certainly had better hair days. The numerous doppelgängers on this show are getting ridiculous and by the end of the preview, Damon seems to be getting fed up, too, joking about spelling the word. It's not a lot to go off of, but the preview does seem to tease some juicy plotlines coming our way.

Executive producer Julie Plec told EW at the end of the season this spring that the writers had written two great villains for the series and were looking for someone in Season 4 that would also have a wow factor as a villain. By the end of Season 3, they had put together Silas, for better or for worse, and had plans to lead audiences exactly where last season’s ender led all season long. However, she also said that Silas won't be the main villain in Season 5, so we have that to look forward to, as well.

The Vampire Diaries might look a little different in the new season, now that a few of the show’s characters are headed off to The Originals, a spinoff series set in New Orleans and featuring characters like Klaus (Joseph Morgan), Elijah (Daniel Gillies), Rebekah (Claire Holt), and Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin). The series will pit Klaus against his former vampire buddy Marcel in a battle that will include witches, werewolves, and other creatures from lore. Fans of The Vampire Diaries may have already seen the introductory spinoff episode last season, and both programs will be moving forward on the CW this year.

We still have a while to wait before both programs premiere on the network. As the trailer notes, The Vampire Diaries will be hitting the schedule on Thursday, October 3 at 8 p.m. EST. The Originals premiere will also air on October 3, following The Vampire Diaries at 9 p.m. EST. You can check out the full (and revised) list of the CW return dates here.
