300 Dominates High Definition Sales
I think it was a foregone conclusion that 300 would be a hot commodity for home entertainment. The movie itself was just phenomenal; one of those that quickly becomes a “must have” when it comes out on DVD. It’s also the kind of movie that looks absolutely perfect on high definition, leading us to call this the pinnacle of achievement for HD DVD (read our review here).
Therefore it’s no surprise to find out that 300 is responsible for breaking the record for high definition sales, selling more than 250,000 copies on HD DVD and Blu-ray disc since its July 31st launch date, according to a press release from Warner Brothers Home Video. That’s a lot of shirtless Spartan soldiers.
This continues Warner Brothers’ successful streak towards High Definition. According to their release, they hold six of the top 10 selling high definition titles (The Departed, Superman Returns, Batman Begins, Happy Feet, “Planet Earth” – The Complete Collection, and now 300.
I’d be interested in seeing the breakdown of sales – how many were purchased on Blu-ray versus HD DVD, and I’m sure there’s information out there on how many players have been sold, but if you’re one of the few people with a high definition player who hasn’t purchased 300 on a high def format, you’re missing out. This is one release not to be missed.
