Alternate Opening For Vacancy
Let’s be honest: most of the good ideas to make use of the DVD format have come by now. The really good ideas just get used over and over again, which is why DVDs that don’t come with much bonus material are disappointing. There’s a level of expectation now. Every once in a while, a studio comes up with another good idea, however, and then other pictures jump on the new bandwagon, ready to exploit the idea for their own purposes.
This week’s idea: We’ve all heard of alternate endings. In fact, having one of those isn’t that uncommon. If an ending doesn’t test well studios just find another one that does. But how about an alternate opening? How rare is that? Well, that’s what the DVD for Vacancy, the thriller with Luke Wilson and Kate Beckinsale, is bragging.
I can’t imagine being in on that meeting – “Yeah, Nimrod (no, I’m not being rude –that’s the director’s name)… we showed the movie to a test audience last night. No, they didn’t love it… in fact, most of them left right away. Can we change the opening to the movie so we can actually get a test audience to stick around for more than five minutes?”
Along with the alternate opening, the DVD includes deleted scenes, a behind the scenes look titled “Checking In: The Cast and Crew of Vacancy, and a featurette on “Mason’s Video Picks: Extended Snuff Films.”
Vacancy hits DVD and Blu-Ray on August 14th. Take a look at the cover art below:
