Bachelor Party Gets A Sequel
Do direct-to-DVD sequels really count? Some of them sell a lot of copies, but as a movie fan I usually don’t pay much attention to American Pie: Band Camp when discussing the merits of the American Pie series. They’re almost a separate thing unto themselves. I refuse to let them tarnish the image of whatever original idea they’re cashing in on.
That’s going to be especially true for this I think. Fox has announced to Production Weekly that they’re releasing a direct-to-DVD sequel to the 1984 raunch comedy classic Bachelor Party. It’s directed by James Ryan and written by Jay Logino, neither of whom has ever done anything worth noting as far as I can tell.
The original Bachelor Party starred Tom Hanks as a down on his luck man about to be married to Tawny Kitaen. Yeah, that Tawny Kitaen. It doesn’t matter what her character’s name was. His friends throw him the bachelor part to end all bachelor parties, things get out of control, and women go missing clothes. Good times.
For the sequel, the movie follows another soon-to-be married dude named Ron whose scheming brother-in-law throws him the ultimate bachelor party in order to sabotage Ron’s relationship with his fiancée. Ron must resist temptation to remain true to his future wife and make it to the wedding. Yep, it has nothing to do with any of the characters in the original film. It’s not so much a sequel as a completely separate movie that is also about a wild bachelor party using the name of the original movie in order to get people to buy the DVD.
The really sad thing is, this isn’t even the first straight-to-DVD Bachelor party cash-in. In 2006 Kal Penn starred in a different one called Bachelor Party Vegas. I doubt doing another one is going to help the concept get any better.
