Charlyne Yi Gets A Lesson In Love In Paper Heart
Have you ever been in love? Maybe you have, maybe you haven’t. Either way, you’ll get a kick out of Charlyne Yi’s hilarious yet endearing mockumentary on the topic. On December 1st you can see what happens when the ultimate love-skeptic gets a firsthand experience of what it’s like to care deeply for another person when Paper Heart hits DVD and Blu-ray.
Knocked Up’s Charlyne Yi...well, a fictionalized version of Knocked Up’s Charlyne Yi...doesn’t believe in love. In an attempt to understand the emotion, she sets out on a road trip with director Jake Johnson (Nicholas Jasenovec) to see why people hold the emotion in such high regard. It just so happens that while on this quest, Charlyne meets and falls for actor Michael Cera. Ironically, her documentary on a concept she’s wary of turns into an exploration of her own romantic experience.
You’ve got to be heartless not to fall for Paper Heart. Yi’s transition from a goofy girl not quite convinced love actually exists to a deep character in the midst of a serious emotional struggle is remarkable. Even though Yi and Cera only play fictionalized versions of themselves, if you’re a fan of one or the other, Paper Heart is a must buy.
The bonus-features list is smaller than I’d hoped, but the material included will certainly appeal to fans of the film. Both the BD and DVD comes with the uncut version of the movie, a making-of featurette, live musical performances by Yi, the “Heaven” music video by Cera and Yi, love interviews with the comedians, and some deleted scenes. I was hoping for feature commentary and a gag reel, but I’ll settle for the uncut film and the music videos.
Unless you have an affinity for Blu-ray Hi-Def, don’t go spending the $39.98 on the BD when you can get the DVD for just $29.98. Paper Heart will be just as effective in standard definition.
