Cover Art For S. Darko Brings New Fears
Let me be clear up front: I think the idea of S. Darko, a direct to DVD sequel to Richard Kelly’s surprise hit Donnie Darko is a horrible idea. I’m not saying I’m closed to seeing it to find out if the studio manages to pull something off here, but conceptually doing a sequel to the movie is a bad idea. The first movie was such a well crafted film the way it turned out, that even the director’s cut lessens the movie as a whole, so messing with the mythology even further by putting out a sequel is a disaster in the making.
Now the cover art has been released for S. Darko and it’s just as terrible as the concept of a sequel. I’m really hoping what has been done here is an attempt to put a cover together that ties into the original movie, and not something that represents what S. Darko is about in any way, because it looks like she’s going to have a female version of Frank the Bunny showing up to guide her around. If that happens… well, I might just close that open mind I try watching it with and turn the TV off right then and there - an event that has only happened with one movie in my time as a film critic.
The artwork is there to the right, with Samantha standing in front of what seriously looks like a female version of Frank’s demented bunny face. To see a slightly larger version, head over to DVD Active. The direct-to-DVD release comes out on DVD and Blu-ray on April 28th.
