The DVD Blend Celebrates Pride
Each week DVDs come out. Some of them are worth your time and money and some aren't. Some of them are movies I've seen, and some of them aren’t. Regardless, I give you my opinion on the big releases of the week. If the releases sound like something you want to buy, just click the link to go to Amazon.com and you’ll support Cinema Blend with a few pennies. Take it or leave it, here's the DVD Blend.
Cinema Blend Pick of the Week:
Pride
I have to be honest with you. I’m fairly confident that had I gotten a chance to see Black Snake Moan in theaters you’d be reading about that movie as our pick of the week. Unfortunately I was one of the many who didn’t get a chance (or didn’t give the movie a chance in some of your cases). That’s not to say that Pride isn’t an excellent movie – it really is. Terrance Howard shows why he’s more than just a flash in the pan as a coach who tries to lead a rag-tag swim team to success. Sure, the film is quite clichéd, but this is a case of why these stereotypes and story clichés exist. Pride avoids getting hung up on them and instead builds off of them as a strong foundation. Particularly strong is the scene stealing Bernie Mac, who proves to be the heart of the movie. While Howard certainly has talent and isn’t just a star burning out quickly, Mac shows who has the true capacity for a long, durable career.
Worth mentioning: | |||
Row 1 - Cell 0 | Shooter - Mark Wahlberg is the latest one man army to appear on the big screen. Here he plays a former special ops sniper who is conned into “figuring out” a terrorist plot to assassinate the president and then is framed as the one who committed it. Justice and revenge ensue as you might expect. | Row 1 - Cell 2 | Dead Silence - James Wan doesn’t exactly reinvigorate the horror franchise the way he did with his last creation, Saw, but Dead Silence does manage some excellent gothic imagery and supurb sound design – and when’s the last time you heard of a movie being pointed out for that? |
Row 2 - Cell 0 |
