The DVD Blend Enters 1408

Each week DVDs come out. Some of them are worth your time and money and some aren't. Some of them are movies I've seen, and some of them aren’t. Regardless, I give you my opinion on the big releases of the week. If the releases sound like something you want to buy, just click the link to go to Amazon.com and you’ll support Cinema Blend with a few pennies. Take it or leave it, here's the DVD Blend.

Cinema Blend Pick of the Week:

1408

There are a lot of good picks this week, but when a lot of this year’s horror options involve torture and sadistic behavior, a suspense thriller gets just enough of an edge to be the pick of the week. Mikael Håfström does an excellent job staging this psychological thriller and doesn’t resort to the typical jump scare… much. As you might expect from a picture that centers around John Cusack, the acting is wonderful as Cusack’s Mike Enslin goes from skeptic to believer over the course of the film’s running time as he confronts the evil room. The DVD includes several deleted scenes as well as an alternate ending I can’t wait to see and several looks at the making of the movie, including one from Cusack’s point of view as the lead actor, and for a lot of time the only actual person on screen.

Worth mentioning:
Row 1 - Cell 0 Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer - I wasn’t a huge fan of the first FF picture, but the sequel gives a better sense of the team as a family with a tighter story. Frankly, I even think the effects work better this time around, especially as the mysterious Silver Surfer has to be realized through the use of CG (something they should have done with The Thing all along). Available in separate single-disc (below) and two-disc (left) special editions.Row 1 - Cell 2 The Jungle Book: 40th Anniversary Edition - Mowgli, Baloo, and Bagheera come home on DVD but this disc comes with more than “The Bare Necessities.” Instead the movie comes out in Disney's two-disc Platinum edition. Check it out for a fascinating look at how this classic picture came to be, including production and concept art, deleted material, games, and even an all new musical number performed by Jonas Brothers.
