The DVD Blend Has Found Serenity
Each week DVDs come out. Some of them are worth your time and money and some aren't. Some of them are movies I've seen, and some of them aren’t. Regardless, I give you my opinion on the big releases of the week. If the releases sound like something you want to buy, just click the link to go to Amazon.com and you’ll support Cinema Blend with a few pennies. Take it or leave it, here's the DVD Blend.
Cinema Blend Pick of the Week:
Serenity (Collector’s Edition)
Typically we try not to promote double-dip DVD releases, but this is one I can kind of get behind. Considering the failure at the box office (shut up browncoats: the movie bombed as far as the box office numbers go), it’s not surprising Universal would play things cautious with the initial DVD release. Now we’re getting the two-disc set we should have had from the start, complete with commentary by Joss Whedon and members of the cast (including Nathan Fillion – does that mean nobody else gets a chance to talk?). My only real disappointment about this release, which is pretty much a guaranteed purchase for most Serenity fans, is that it’s not coming out on a high definition format. I guess that makes sense. The movie’s already out on HD DVD and it’s unlikely the new content is high definition, but if I’m going to buy this DVD again I’d much rather get more out of it than just another disc of content.
Purchase Serenity (Collector's Edition)

Row 1 - Cell 0 | Robocop (20th Anniversary Collector’s Edition) - If we’re going to recommend one collector’s edition double dip, we might as well recommend two. Old Robo has been around on DVD through a couple of incarnations, but this 2-disc edition looks like one of the better versions since that decade-old Criterion release. Still one of the best sci-fi action flicks around. | Row 1 - Cell 2 | Ugly Better: Season One - The one new release we can recommend this week is one of the best television shows from last season. “Ugly Betty” is an interesting commentary on physical beauty mixed with typical soap opera antics, right down to a sex changed missing sibling. If you didn’t catch it over the course of the season, here’s your chance. |
