The DVD Blend Unlocks The Code

Each week DVDs come out. Some of them are worth your time and money and some aren't. Some of them are movies I've seen, and some of them aren’t. Regardless, I give you my opinion on the big releases of the week. If the releases sound like something you want to buy, just click the link to go to Amazon.com and you’ll support Cinema Blend with a few pennies. Take it or leave it, here's the DVD Blend.

Cinema Blend Pick of the Week:

The Da Vinci Code

Dan Brown’s novel may have been on the bestseller list for months, but the movie adaptation’s performance certainly was less successful. Despite quite a star-studded cast (Tom Hanks, Audrey Tatou, Ian McKellen, Jean Reno, Paul Bettany, and Alfred Molina) and a wave of controversy (Catholic subgroup Opus Dei demanded the movie be labeled clearly as fiction) the film just didn’t manage to zing. You may blame it on the religious content or director Ron Howard stepping out of his comfort zone, but I put the blame on the fact that I just couldn’t get excited about a quest that even the movie’s characters weren’t interested about being on. Still, a sequel (or prequel – Brown’s Angels and Demons) is already in the works, so you should probably jump on this bandwagon before the next chapter arrives.

Worth mentioning:
Row 1 - Cell 0 Accepted - Justin Long goes way past what’s been done in other college movies as he creates his own college in an effort to not tell his parents he was rejected from every college he applied to. Probably the best underdog comedy this year and just a lot of fun to watch.Row 1 - Cell 2 King Kong – Deluxe Extended Edition - If you were a fan of Peter Jackson’s big monkey opus than you’ve probably already purchased Kong on DVD. If not, time to get more monkey for your money, with added scenes, over half an hour of deleted material, production diaries, and more.
Row 2 - Cell 0
Row 3 - Cell 0 Forbidden Planet – Ultimate Collector’s Edition - See Robbie the Robot, Walter Pidgeon, Anne Francis, and a serious Leslie Nielson in this sci-fi version of Shakespeare’s The Tempest. This edition is remastered and includes a robot replica and never before seen footage – definitely worth a look!Row 3 - Cell 2 Strangers With Candy - I was never a fan of the Comedy Central series, but a positive review from Roger Ebert is enough to pique my interest in this big screen follow up… that and Stephen Colbert’s involvement, who both acts and serves as exec producer and who has come far since the series’ early days.
