DVD Buyers Remember The 5th Of November
In theaters, V for Vendetta did solid, if not spectacular business. But last week the Wachowski’s politically charged comic adaptation arrived on DVD, and exploded.
Warner Brothers is reporting that the film was first on both DVD sales and rental charts last week, earning $9.4 million just in rentals alone. In DVD sales it outsold its nearest competitor, The Shaggy Dog, by a margin of nearly 2 – 1. To put that into perspective, the film only made $25 million its opening weekend in theaters. It’s going to make close to that just in its first week on DVD.
It probably helps that Warners released to different editions of the film simultaneously. A prettier, 2-disc edition was delivered along with a more stripped-down, single disc release. The 2-disc is more expensive and by all accounts really not much better, but I bought it simply because it’s the 2-disc that has the better cover.
The rave reviews V for Vendetta received when in theaters now seem to be paying off again for it on DVD. The revolution lives on in the homes, hearts, and minds of audiences. Read our review of the Wachowski’s phenomenal film on DVD by clicking here.
