This DVD Is Not Yet Rated
Forget about Michael Moore. Last year documentarian Kirby Dick took on a much more impressive target than the government, big corporations, or the medical industry. Instead Dick turned his microscope on his own industry in This Film Is Not Yet Rated, targeting the Motion Picture Association of America and the current system through which films get rated. Now the film is headed for DVD, with an announced January 23rd release.
The movie includes interviews with filmmakers like Kevin Smith, John Waters, and Kimberly Peirce who each talk about their own experiences with the ratings board. It’s not the interviews that make the film truly compelling though. Instead it’s the subplot of the film following a detective who is trying to unveil the mysterious hidden members of the ratings board that is really an eye opener.
The DVD will contain deleted footage from the documentary and a Q&A with Kirby Dick, but the most interesting extra (at least in concept) is a filmmaker’s commentary. Hearing why he selected the filmmakers he did and how he and the private detective went about their operation is sure to open just as many eyes as the film itself does.
It’s rare that I put a big push out there for a movie, but if you’re at all interested in movies and the workings of Hollywood, this film is definitely worth checking out. With a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it release schedule in most markets, DVD is your chance to see an amazing documentary at work.
