El Cantante Goes Bare
Considering all the hate mail we received for declaring that “if someone manages to make a worse film this year [than El Cantante] that’ll be quite an accomplishment.” I really thought the movie had a following. Well, it looks like there’s only three or four of you out there who are really vocal, because New Line is barely putting any effort into the upcoming DVD release. The movie has been scheduled for an October 30th DVD release date, and the disc is practically bare.
The movie follows Jennifer Lopez and her husband Marc Anthony as Puchi and Hector Lavoe, showing the rise of the salsa music icon and his eventual destruction. The DVD will include the movie, a making-of documentary, and a commentary from the director and writer. No real-life look at Lavoe, no justification from Lopez and Anthony for making the movie, just a featurette and a commentary. Even Browncoats managed to get more than that, and their show was cancelled.
I think this just confirms that the movie is just as bad as we said, and the studio isn’t going to waste any more money to make the DVD special (and there’s no announced high definition option planned either). Hopefully the few fanatical viewers out there will enjoy their bare bones DVD and we can all put El Cantante behind us very soon.
