Frostbite Sets In When Frozen Hits DVD And Blu-Ray September 28th
After seeing Adam Green’s Frozen in the dead of New York City’s winter in February, it’s a bit of a relief to find out that the DVD is due out on September 28th, when the colder months are still weeks away. Even with some time to recover before the ski season begins, I doubt you’ll be able to hop on a ski lift without thinking twice thanks to this movie.
Dan, Joe, and Parker (Kevin Zegers, Shawn Ashmore, and Emma Bell) are all on the mountain enjoying some skiing and snowboarding time, but as the day comes to a close, they still haven’t had enough, so they beg the lift operator for one last ride to the top before closing. He reluctantly gives them the go-ahead, but some miscommunication between him and another operator leads to the lift being shut down before the trio reaches the top. With no one in sight, a storm on the way, and the resort closing down for the week, the amusing shock of their situation turns into pure terror, and they realize that unless they can get help, they run the risk of freezing to death.
Even with a few minor silly plot twists, Frozen is beautiful in its simplicity. Nearly the entire film plays out in the chairlift, and when our main players aren’t submitting to dangerous attempts at survival, we’re left merely with their conversation. It’s actually these moments that make Frozen so powerful, because it’s during the dialogue-heavy portions of the film that we really get to know the characters, and the more attached we become to them, the more heartbreaking their situation becomes.
The DVD or Blu-ray is worth picking up for the film alone, both versions will also come with a nice selection of bonus material, including audio commentary with the stars and filmmakers, four behind-the-scenes featurettes, the theatrical trailer, and some deleted scenes. Opting for the BD will add on an additional format-exclusive audio commentary with Green, cinematographer Will Barratt, and editor Ed Marx.
