Here Comes The Other Half Of Grindhouse
The first half of Grindhouse has already come out on DVD with disappointing results. The movie may have made decent sales at a number 2 spot for the week (beaten by We Are Marshall), but removed from the “Grindhouse” environment, the movie just doesn’t hold up that well. Especially taken away from Robert Rodriguez’s Planet Terror, Death Proof just feels like a regurgitation of Quentin Tarantino’s previous work.
Now Planet Terror is headed for its individual release on October 16th. Can Rodriguez’s film fare better than Tarantino’s? Well, the movie is full of more action and Grindhouse audiences seemed to think it was the better of the two pictures. Like the first half, Planet Terror is extended, returning the “missing reel” that was taken out to give the film part of the Grindhouse feel, and the set includes a second disc filled with extras.
While I’m excited about Planet Terror as a better picture, I’m still disappointed by the idea that Grindhouse was split in two and the fake trailers are nowhere to be seen. I also still have my doubts that the philosophy of these grindhouse-style films transfer well to home video, as I mentioned in my Death Proof review.
Take a look at the bonus material to be found on the Planet Terror release, coming on October 16th:
