The Island And Daybreak Come To DVD
When I first got this announcement I thought it was talking about new versions of older DVDs. After all, the titles The Island and Daybreak are both attached to bigger budget Hollywood movies, so a double-dip DVD release wouldn’t be unexpected. That’s not the case though. Both of these movies are foreign films, being brought to DVD by Film Movement in February.
The Island is a Russian film directed by Pavel Lounguine. The movie is a spiritual character study of an unusual man living in a Russian monastery. Visitors believe he has the ability to heal and predict the future, but the young man is weighed down by a sin committed in his youth. Hoping for salvation so he can rest in peace after his death, little does the man know that peace could come before his end of days.
From Iran, Daybreak, based on true stories, revolves around a man found guilty of murder. In Islamic law the victim’s family gains ownership of the offender’s life, but when the family doesn’t show up to claim the offender, the man finds himself caught between life and death, a purgatory between retribution and forgiveness.
Both movies will be released on DVD by Film Movement on February 5th. Each film is presented in its original language with English subtitles.
