Kung Fu Hustle Deluxe Edition Kicks Axe
I’ve never been a huge fan of Kung Fu movies. There has to be more than just some cool kung fu moves to get me involved in a movie’s story – and I want a story, not just two hours of ass kicking. Kung Fu Hustle has it all. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll see ass kicking, you will believe a man can fly – if there’s an overused cliché phrase to describe a movie, it’s applicable to this one. I really can’t describe it better than the thrown about quote from Entertainment Weekly: “Think Kill Bill meets Looney Tunes and you have Kung Fu Hustle.
The previous DVD release of this Stephen Chow wasn’t exactly bare bones, but apparently Sony thought they could do a little better, so now we’re getting a Deluxe Edition DVD titled the “Axe-Kicking Edition”. For those unfamiliar with the story of the movie, the title is a play on the name of the villainous Axe Gang who terrorizes the small Pig Sty Alley.
Last time we got deleted scenes, outtakes, a commentary, and a pretty dry interview between Ric Meyers and Stephen Chow. It looks like we’re getting that, plus a few new things:
- ”Bringing Down the House” – The production design of Kung Fu Hustle
- ”Dressed to Kill” – The costume design of Kung Fu Hustle
- ”Organized Chaos” – Yuen Wo Ping and the fight choreography of Kung Fu Hustle
- New footage from the Hong Kong version of Kung Fu Hustle
Doesn’t sound like a whole lot of new material, so I’m hoping more information is forthcoming. Otherwise this is a sad double dip attempt aimed at fans who might want to see more of the Hong Kong version of the movie. Kung Fu Hustle: Axe Kicking Edition comes out on July 31st.
