Kurt Cobain About a Son
The death of Heath Ledger has been particularly hard because of the actor’s youth and the promise he showed for his career. The last time I can remember an artist being mourned for similar reasons was the death of Kurt Cobain, who died at the young age of 27. This year, the day before Cobain would have turned 41, the artist is celebrated and remembered through the film Kurt Cobain About a Son, which arrives on DVD on February 19th.
The movie, built from previously unheard interviews with Cobain himself (originally conducted for Michael Azerrad’s book Come as you Are), shows a unique look at the musician and his successes and failures. Mix in images of Washington state and a soundtrack by Nirvana producer Steve Fisk, Death Cab for Cutie’s Ben Gibbard, and music from artists who influenced Cobain, and you’ve got quite a film. In fact, the movie was nominated for the 2007 Independent Spirit Award.
The DVD doesn’t include much in the way of extras – just a behind-the-scenes featurette, but there’s not exactly a ton you can do with a movie like this.
