I love Disney’s Mary Poppins. I loved it when I reviewed the 40th Anniversary Edition of the DVD, five years ago. Wait a minute - five years? Wow. It must be time for a 45th Anniversary Edition of the movie.
Sure enough, Walt Disney Pictures has announced a new version of the DVD for the 45th Anniversary. They’re even adding some new content to the two-disc release, thanks to the Broadway adaptation of the Disney play. The new release has all the material that made the 40th Anniversary edition so excellent, as well as a look at the creative process behind making the Broadway musical, and a previously unfilmed performance from the show - the “Step in Time” number, also available as a free downloadable mp3 with the set.
Mary Poppins was an excellent release five years ago, and I’m impressed that Disney is actually adding something new for this edition and not just changing the number, the cover art, and calling it a day. If you don’t already have this Julie Andrews classic in your collection, the new Anniversary edition comes to stores January 27th.
