Netflix Moving Toward More Streaming, Fewer DVDs
With everyone trying to figure out the right way to monetize and deliver content digitally, it's no surprise that rental giant Netflix is predicting that most of its business will soon be streaming content, with DVDs relegated to a much diminished capacity, possibly as soon as two years from now. They've already created new "streaming only" subscriptions and upped their full DVDs-plus-streaming memberships accordingly. However, one of the steps the company is taking to prepare for that digital future has ticked off some of their loyal customers who like getting DVDs in the mail, thank you very much.
Netflix director of product management Jamie Odell recently mentioned in a blog post that the company would be removing the "Add to DVD Queue" button from streaming devices using their service, so Netflix could " concentrate on offering you the titles that are available to watch instantly." Sounds innocent enough, except for the legions of angry commenters who decried the move, complaining about both the quality and the limited selection of Netflix's "Instant Watch" catalogue.
What do you guys think? There's no question that physical media is on the way out whether we like it or not. Should Netflix focus on developing their business model in that direction, or should they keep the actual discs around for the folks without a decent broadband connection?
