Oscar Contender: The Fighter DVD And Blu-Ray Announced
Update: We've added the box art below.
Even if its premise isn’t your bottle of beer, err cup of tea, The Fighter has several Academy Award-nominated performances that make it a must-watch. First you have Christian Bale playing has-been fighter and drug addict Dicky Eklund. Then you have Dicky’s head-case of a mother, Alice Ward, played by Melissa Leo. Finally, Amy Adams shows some serious chops as Charlene Fleming, a girl who has made some bad choices but is trying to turn her life around by dating Dicky’s brother, the fighter Micky Ward (Mark Wahlberg). Though the performances I’ve mentioned are the ones given the Oscar nods, Adams, Leo, and Bale are not the only noteworthy people populating The Fighter; they are just the most overt.
For a glimpse at these grandiose performances, all you’ll need is YouTube, but to gain the whole picture, you’ll need to grab a copy of the DVD and Blu-Ray release scheduled to hit the market on March 15th. Paramount Home Entertainment has included several features with its Blu-Ray/DVD/digital release. There will be several deleted scenes, with optional accompanying commentary. Along with a trailer, the disc will feature commentary from director David O. Russell, as well as two video segments. The first will be on the filming of The Fighter, and the second will be called “Keeping the Faith.”
Some of you probably held out from seeing this film precisely because of all the qualities I listed in the first paragraph. That's not to say you don't appreciate a good performance, but oftentimes, so-called actor's films skimp on entertainment in order to clean up come award's time. While The Fighter may fall into that trap now and again, on the whole, it's a very entertaining movie that will be appreciated by Oscar snobs as well as boxing fans, Boston fans, and romance fans. There's enough in The Fighter to fight through a viewing, regardless of what you're seeking to get out of it.
