Pick Of The Week: My Name Is Bruce
This is one of those weeks that’s a bit challenging as a film lover. Do I go with a quality film as my pick of the week, and promote W., which wound up being a lot more interesting than I would have expected, or do I go with something nowhere near as artistic or high quality, but equally entertaining.
I guess at the end of the day I’m less of a political kind of guy and more of a Bruce Campbell kind of person, because I’m have to go with My Name is Bruce as my pick of the week. Sure, it’s nowhere near the social commentary of films like Blindness or W., but what it is is a lot of fun. Bruce Campbell is the power that got me into cult films, paving the way into a whole genre of movies I otherwise would turn my nose up towards.
My Name is Bruce features Bruce as himself instead of his on screen alter-ego Ash, but he’s still doing what he does best - fighting monsters. Sure, it lacks the flair of Bubba Ho-Tep or the outrageousness of The Evil Dead, but it’s still a heck of a lot of fun. Sometimes that’s what we need from a movie, and I’m not embarrassed to say this week that’s what I’m going to go with. There’s still a ton of good releases this week though, so if Campbell’s latest isn’t up your alley and you’re unwilling to give it a chance, check out some of the other big titles below.
