"Premium Video On Demand" Could Make Titles Available Sooner, Might Include Free DVD Copies

As reported by THR, many studios want to narrow the window between theatrical release and making their films available on demand, news that probably doesn't thrill theater owners or DVD retailers. One of the ideas being floated is to pair "premium VOD" titles, which would premiere earlier at a higher price point, with coupons for a free DVD copy of the movie, to be redeemed at your local DVD store.

Presumably the DVD retailers would be getting a cut of the increased premium VOD price point, since they're going to be cashing in these coupons. That would get people off their asses and into the stores, where they would then hopefully spend money on other things, which can't help but assist the bottom line. Then again, with more people shopping online, Best Buy abandoning DVD sales, and Blockbuster filing for bankruptcy, this may all be a moot point soon as the DVD format continues its death march. And, of course, none of this helps the poor, beleaguered theater owners if the studios start releasing major titles to VOD two months after they were in theaters.

What do you guys think? Would you pay $25 - $30 to watch a movie on demand if it came with a coupon for a free copy of the DVD? If you could watch titles that soon on demand, would you even care about having a physical copy of the movie to put on your shelf?
