Richard Gere Puts On The Hoax On DVD
I’m not a huge Richard Gere fan but for some reason sometimes I find the concepts of his movies appeal to me enough to get past the actor involved. The Hoax is one of those movies. I find the idea of the movie incredibly interesting, so I want to see it despite Gere.
The Hoax is the true-life story of Clifford Irving, a man who pulled off one of the biggest media scams of all time… or almost pulled it off. Irving sold his biography of the reclusive Howard Hughes for a million dollars, but actually had no book to sell. Pulled into his own con, Irving started to write the biography anyway, and was eventually outdone by his own product and paranoia. Gere plays Irving in the movie along with a full cast that includes Alfred Molina, Marcia Gay Harden, and Stanley Tucci. The movie itself is based off of Irving’s tell-all novel, The Hoax.
Buena Vista Home Entertainment has announced The Hoax is coming to DVD on October 16th, with the following features on the disc:
Bonus Materials
- ”Stranger Than Fiction” – A “making-of” documentary, with more conjecture on Clifford’s motivation.
- Deleted Scenes – over 13 minutes worth with commentary by Director Lasse Hallstrom and writer William Wheeler
- ”Mike Wallace: Reflections on a Con” – A look at the “60 minutes” host’s encounters with Clifford and the 1970s interview with the writer where he swore the book was not a fake… and the follow up interview that took place 27 years later.
- Feature Audio Commentaries – Director Lasse Hallstrom and writer William Wheeler provide one commentary while Producers Leslie Holleran and Josh Maurer provide a second.
- ”Business as Pleasure” – An ad-libbed sequence between Richard Gere and Alfred Molina
